Thanks Everyone!

Just wanted to say thanks to all the kind words from friends and random strangers about my story in today’s Times. It’s not exactly the story I ever thought I’d write, but it’s nice to know people liked it.

Here’s a photo collage I made that the Times wasn’t able to run showing the ceiling demolition.

Also – I didn’t really include the fact that the property is a duplex (and trust me, renovating two houses at once is even more fun!) I rent it out on Airbnb, so check it out and if you’re coming to LA anytime soon, perhaps you can stay here!

I’ll also note that the one thing that kept me from completely coming unglued was having a kick-ass contractor. Those are his legs dangling from my ceiling. If you’re in LA and you need a really nice, funny, totally honest contractor, let me know!

  1. Hello Stranger, this is your old pal from Wesleyan, Tara Magner. Funny you should turn up in the NYT today, as I was thinking of you recently and reflecting on how you gave me the greatest Tom Waits collection ever committed to a cassette tape. I was a fan before you made the mix tape, but that particular mix sealed it for life. How the hell are you? I am well, living in Chicago, writing checks for a living, and generally loving life. Still in close touch with Shizuko, Tibby, Aislinn, et cetera. I hope are you are well. Tara

  2. Your voice is beautiful. I hate the home section but your piece was real. Writing seems to be so natural for you. The humor and self awareness. No malice. I’m so glad you’re getting good feedback and I hope this propels you. I also have a hard time making decisions and went though a huge reno (great success) look at my web site and see how I disguise indecision ! All my best. Kate

  3. I read your article in the NYT and wanted to write and thank you – most especially for the very real pictures of your house (not all of us can ever, ever aspire to the kinds of renovation – perfection generally featured in the NYTs (which I of course read/look at with a sense of envy and ennui). It was very comforting to see a renovated kitchen that looks like mine! Also, nice to hear the voice of honesty about relationships. Well done…
